I used to drive past the New Ambrosia eight times a week a few years ago, always admiring its pristine facade but never stopping to venture inside. Today, that’s all going to change. For this Cantonese Cuisine and Thai restaurant comes highly recommended and I want to know why.
I arrive at 7pm and a friendly waiter shows me to my table near the fire. As I follow him, I can’t help but admire the opulent decor. I feel as though I’ve been transported to a room in an emperor’s palace. The restaurant is decorated in contemporary oriental style with accents of gold. The waiter explains the decor takes inspiration from the definition of ambrosia as being Honey of the Gods.
When I finally look at the menu, I’m pleasantly surprised by the wide choice of vegetarian options. For my starter, I try crispy lettuce wraps oozing with freshly cooked vegetables. It comes as several domed-shaped, blemish-free lettuce leaves oozing with fresh vegetables. It smells wonderful. As for the taste, it’s delicious. It’s crunchy on the outside and then just melts in my mouth.
For my main, I’m seriously tempted by the tofu with green pepper and black bean sauce, but opt for the aubergine with chilli bean sauce. I made the right choice, it’s superb. The sauce, although a bit spicy for me, is thick and full of flavour. It soaks into the nutritious aubergine, making it taste even more heavenly. I skip dessert, instead trying the refreshingly light green tea. Wow, if only my brewed cuppa could taste this good.
The restaurant is fairly busy during my visit on a Friday evening. Takeaway orders are also plentiful, so it’s clearly a hot favourite with regulars. They can add me to that list as well.
